Wool and Cotton

Textile Artist, Barbara Roe Hebb has a keen interest in repurposing materials and discovering new ways to work with natural fibres and textiles.

Barbara uses techniques such as Weaving: (Tapestry and floor loom), Basketry, Spinning, Dying and Textile/fabric sculpture.
Barbara’s early years were spent in rural central Victoria, of the Yorta Yorta Nation, then settled on coastal Wadawurrung country. She has worked with fibre and textiles from childhood; being instructed by her sister in garment construction, guided through weaving and spinning by her aunt and gathered leather work skills from her father. She explores the potential of raw materials and the challenges they pose. Examples include knitting with kelp and spinning unusual fibers (Camel and Huskie) for weaving.
Barbara exhibits individually and in groups, enjoys the process of creating bespoke wall art on commission and participates in local and overseas art and textile exhibitions.
Reflections on the impact of colonization for First Nation Peoples and the environment, can be seen in her work in recent years, as she focusses full time on her creative practice.
